A Property Manager’s Guide to Pest Control

Blog, Property management|

The job title of property manager is often reduced to “landlord,” which has many negative connotations among apartment residents. You’re seen as a mere tax collector, robbing the hard-working people of rightfully-earned money. Each month, your inhabitants will look with dread at the calendar’s final day scrawled with “RENT DUE,” imagining you maniacally laughing when depositing the check.

Tips to Detect Termite Property Damage this Spring

Property management, Termite Inspection, Termites|

Houston-area homeowners and businesses begin noticing subterranean termites in early spring, when they become visible in swarms by entering homes, commercial buildings and other structures. Known as the “silent destroyers,” termites cause an estimated $5 billion in property damage each year – that’s more damage to homes and businesses than all other natural disasters combined. Adding to the challenge, termite presence is difficult to detect as their activity is hidden behind wallboards, siding or wood trim.

The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) and Holder’s Pest Solutions are celebrating the fifth annual Termite Awareness Week, March 13-19, 2016 to bring awareness to termite prevention, detection and treatment. Although termite treatment is most effective when performed by a licensed pest control professional, it is important that individuals know the signs of a termite infestation and become familiar with prevention methods to combat the invasive insects.

Choose the Right Wood To Prevent Termites In Your Deck

Blog, Termite Inspection, Termites|

Constructing your home’s deck is a significant emotional and financial investment, but is ultimately a rewarding undertaking. Not only does it provide an outdoor gathering space to entertain guests, it can also add value to your home’s listing price. In a cost/value analysis of home improvement projects across the United States, Remodeling Magazine found that homeowners living in the South Central region – which includes Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas – recovered almost 80% of the deck investment after selling.

Dispelling Bed Bug Myths

Bed Bugs, Blog|

“Cimex lectularius” has a common name that is inherently disturbing: “bed bug.” Our beds should be a safe haven; an escape from the outside world and life’s stress. These insects appear at night and crawl throughout your bed sheets, creating an incredibly unnerving feeling when you’re mustering every ounce of strength to maintain a consistent sleep schedule. Indeed, researchers have found, albeit in small sample sizes, that individuals with bed bug-ridden sleeping areas exhibit signs of restlessness and paranoia throughout the night. These blood suckers are truly an enigma when it comes to understanding their effect on human behavior and psychology.

A Few Things Every Hotelier Should Know About Bed Bugs

Bed Bugs, Lodging and hospitality|

Nothing will send potential customers packing faster than bed bugs. A recent survey performed at The University of Kentucky showed bed bugs as the number one reason an individual would choose to leave a hotel.  In some extreme cases, bed bug infestations even lead to large financial implications such as lawsuits. The unfortunate reality is that the nature of your business comes with the risk of a bed bug infestation. It’s important to remember, a bed bug infestation is not a matter of hygiene or cleanliness. These pests do not discriminate.

How A Termite Infestation Can Eat Away At Your Home’s Property Value

Blog, Termite Inspection, Termites|

Determining specific property values can be a complicated task that doesn’t necessarily have a standard outcome. A number of factors determine a home’s worth. An assessor uses a variety of metrics and formulas to assign a specific dollar amount to a home, most importantly its location. A multitude of other factors beyond an owner’s control might sway that initial estimate.
