May 2015 was officially the wettest on record for Texas. That means there is a good chance that your home has more pests. Reports of indoor infestations always climb after heavy rains. Homeowners deal with wasps in the attic, ants in the kitchen, rodents in the walls, millipedes everywhere, spiders by the dozens, and more. With all this Texas rain we’ve been getting, there is a solid chance that your home is already infested.

Here is what you can about it:

Every pest is different. But there are some things you can do to take care of pests in different zones of your house. Here are a few zones and what you can do to make those pests choose to go back outside when the rains have passed.

  • Cellar. Put a dehumidifier down there and add a couple fans if necessary. A dry basement will resist bugs that prefer to be in moist places, like termites, carpenter ants, millipedes, centipedes, earwigs and silverfish.
  • Living spaces. If pests have come into your living spaces, you can resist them by hiding food sources. Keep trash in a sealed can. Put dishes in soapy water instead of next to the sink in a stack. Clean the floor regularly. Keep crumbs cleaned up around the toaster. Put fruit in the refrigerator. All of these will make your home less appealing to pests.
  • Pantry. When bugs and wildlife find their way into your pantry, let them find hard plastic containers. If they crawl around for a bit and don’t find anything to smell or eat, they will move on.
  • Attic. There isn’t a lot you can do about resisting pests in your attic, but you can go up there and do a flashlight inspection. If you see nesting materials, hives or nests, you can get a pest control company to come over and deal with the problem immediately.

Here’s what you can do to prevent it from happening again:
